OPEC was from the beginning and enmeshed within broader developmentalist currents that were sweeping the post-colonial and third world. Most of these third world countries were raw materials exporters. OPEC played a central role in this debate on a new international economic order first of all because it was a member of OPEC and Algeria in particular that launched the idea to have a UN General Assembly specifically devoted to economy and development.
