Jefferson Davis suggested to Congress that they acquire camels from the Middle East. He was won over by Major Henry Wayne in his arguments for using them to colonize and populate the Southwest. In World War I, about 3 million camels were used to ferry equipment. The German Army used camel trains to carry gasoline to their tanks.
