Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings - A Brief Interview
When Becca was nine years old, her grade school teacher read us the Hobbit out loud. She had this profound sense that she'd been in Middle Earth before and felt more like remembrance than encountering it for the first time. And I actually got an image right when she said that. This image arose through my imagination of three overlapping rings. Behind it, there was a great tree, and there was a sunset in the distance. That was the image that I associated with the title of the Lord of the Rings until I read it.
