Chicago Steel and the Memorial Day Massacre

In September of 2020, groundbreaking and ribbon-cutting ceremonies were held at the former site of the Republic Steel Plant on South Avenue O. The $164 million development called Commerce Park Chicago is the first development on that site in 20 years. On May 30, 1967, a plaque was erected by the United Steel Workers of America Committee to commemorate that horrible day. In 1981, Ed Blasek, a local resident and employee of Republic Steel, designed a new sculpture made from 100% locally produced steel.
