A Brief History of Charity

Christianity did not invent charity, nor charitable organizations. Charity is though widely advised in the texts of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East. In Imperial Rome, public works projects like aqueducts, roads, fountains, libraries were all free or highly discounted. Private philanthropic organizations also helped people with burials, food and cash handouts.
