The Knights of the Golden Circle were a 19th-century men's fraternal organization. They were founded by George Bickley, who was also an author and publisher. He ran away from home at age 12 to make his way in the world; he later became a doctor practicing phrenology. His novel Adelaska is similar to Harriet Beecher Stowe's popular Uncle Tom's Cabin.
