CHAPTER

J. Edgar Hoover Wasn't a One Dimension Racist

J. Edgar Hoover was racist in many ways, but he wasn't a one-dimensional racist according to the author of his new book. He went after white supremacist groups or neo-Nazi groups with two criteria: use of violence and thumbing their noses at federal authority. The FBI's anti lynching efforts in the 40s where they did pretty big investigations didn't actually produce great results. They were a little more successful in the 60s and going after the Ku Klux Klan. In fact, they're using a lot of the same techniques against the Klan that they're using against the civil rights movement against Martin Luther King for better and for worse.
