The Characteristics of a Hill Fort
The location of these sites on hill tops or ridge tops affords some kind of defensive capability to the site, but more significantly, perhaps provide them with panoramic views over a very large area. The etymology of hill fort is from the nineteenth century where these sort of enclosed sites on top o hill were just seen as classically defensive in their form and location. They are surrounded by walls, sometimes, but more often, banks and ditches than palisades or fences. But really it's a way of showing off, a showing off to other communities, to other individuals, and it's something that helps bond the community.
