The location of these sites on hill tops or ridge tops affords some kind of defensive capability to the site, but more significantly, perhaps provide them with panoramic views over a very large area. The etymology of hill fort is from the nineteenth century where these sort of enclosed sites on top o hill were just seen as classically defensive in their form and location. They are surrounded by walls, sometimes, but more often, banks and ditches than palisades or fences.
