It certainly has its advantages having external control in this way. You can really grab the exact kind of range you want, make it do vibrato essentially or do a very slight change in speed. Now that's something clearly I could never have done with such robotic accuracy using my rather unsteady hand. It might be handy to see what happens if you pan the original take against the very speeded take which gives rise to the flange away from each other so one occupies the left speaker the other the right. If you separate them something else happens you get kind of a widening effect something else anyway.
