Getting Good at Bad Emotions
No one wants to feel ashamed, but we should all want to have a sense of shame. Part of what getting good at it would entail would mean separating an ethically valuable sense of shame from the pernicious, corrosive, socially induced kinds of shames. The idea is to raise that floor so that there are more and more things that one would not do because you would feel ashamed to do them. To ever even get to that point, you've got to have a willingness to tolerate shame,. You've got to treat shame as bing of really importance for your own ethical well being and your own dignity as a human being.
