Word Contests - What's the Difference?
In 1923, two different people submitted the winning word for scoff. Both I think were given the $200 in prize money and they came up with scoff. It was a big success except for the fact that scoff law almost immediately changed its meaning. Even when you do create a word, it might not actually stick with the meaning that you want it to.
