CHAPTER

Wanna's Birth in New Spain

Wanna said her birth was legitimate, something she repeated at numerous points throughout her life. It seems to have been common knowledge that Wanna's parents were not married. Religious orders and convents in New Spain were stratified and segregated as the rest of society was. The first one that Wanna joined was the convent of the discalced Carmelites of St. Joseph but she was only there for a few months. About 18 months later, she became Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz at the convent of Santa Paula of the Horanamite Order in Mexico City.
