Emily was nervous about the new school but she coped easily and diligently studied her classes. It's around this time in her late teens that a more pronounced split begins to manifest between Emily and religion. On one occasion Miss Lyon called on all who wished to be Christians to rise. Emily Dickinson remained seated. They thought it queer I didn't rise. She reportedly recounted the scene to her family. The rift that made it clear she was an outlier would become ever greater until, in her 30s, she stopped going to church altogether.
