Is There a Higher Standard of Conduct in the US?

In Australia, police are held to a higher legal standard perhaps than just an ordinary person because they have training. And yet it seems like in the US that they held to a lower standard of conduct than just a typical random person or at least courts are so much more forgiving on their part. I think there's this general sense that we are hiring these people and trusting them to maintain law and order but sometimes force is going to be necessary. The problem is it's tricky to figure out where to draw the line in terms of what is a justified use of force there.
