In any pre modern society, and certainly this is true of medieval Europe. Everything is called around God. This reality that we're living in that we can sense with our sensory perception or even measure without science is just one part of something very much bigger. And so when you live in that world, what someone like Julian of Norwich is doing is dedicating her life to communing with that creator. It's worth saying that even in the middle ages being an anchor right and warming yourself up in a church is pretty extreme behavior.
