Why Aren't Spiders So Venomous?

Mary-Eller's brother was bitten by a redback spider when he was three. She has two little kids who are terrified of spiders, which either means I have not shown them enough or I've shown them too many. The British perspective on funnel webs seems to make you afraid since Billy Connolly did a routine about funnel webs. But in the UK, there aren't any deadly web spiders yet - and if there is people will always be screaming or jumping up on chairs. So what do we know about why people seem to have this fear?
