The History of Butter and Margarine in Canada

After a royal commission and a trip to the Supreme Court, it was decided margarine was a provincial matter. It was determined that Newfoundland could make and sell margarine as long as it stayed within the province. But for a while, there was a legal to add any colour to margarine. Manufacturers weren't allowed to make it look like butter by adding yellow colouring. Some margarine companies would even provide a small colour packet. And you could add that to your own margarine to make itLook more like butter but you had to mix it yourself.
