Joshua Bowen is an ecereologist and author of the atheist handbook to the Old Testament. He says there's no question whatsoever that there's both debt and chattel slavery in the Hebrew Bible, as well as laws of the Hebrew Bible. In Proverbs 29, how do you get a slave to behave? How do you get them to do what you need them to do? You beat them with a wooden rod. It reminds me of biblical instruction for parents regarding children or else they're going to be fuckups.
