The Anti-Clerical Laws of Caius
President Caius was so hostile to religion that in 1926 the American Ambassador, James Sheffield, wrote to the US Secretary of State. Ordinary lay Catholics started to take up arms against the government, leading to an event known as La Cristiada. President Caius also ramped up the tension by ordering all the churches in Fr. Tribio's state of Jalisco to be shut and they remained closed for two years. The bishops were really walking a tightrope because if they openly endorsed the Cristeros movement, that could provoke even worse situation for Mexican Catholics.
