Strong ties are people that you know well and have lots of mutual friends in common. Weak ties, who you don't,. maybe don't know quite as well, and you also don't have a lot of mutual friends with. The weak tie bridges are really important when it comes to diffusion of new ideas and new new words. They're more likely to introduce a new word to a community because they have this exposure to whatever other social group is potentially using that word.
