How to Avoid the Madness of the Dilemma
I think that there's this powerful impulse to rationalize when you're confronted with the singer argument. So I teach Peter Singer's argument in my giant class on evil, the same class where I talked about the Holocaust and that sort of thing. Now, one possible way to avoid your dilemma is to become a little more comfortable with seeing yourself as short of the moral ideal without giving up on progress.
