The History of the Tone Poem

The tone poem first appeared in 1828 with the unknown composer Karl Lowe, but Franz Liszt was the first prominent composer to write tone poems. Composers like Dvorak, Smetna, Glinka, Balakire and more all wrote works based on poems, paintings, myths, fairy tales, stories, and even novels and plays. As you'll hear, Rakhmananov took a completely different approach.
