Governor Dunmore and the Virginia House of Burgesses

Governor Dunmore sent his Marines, Royal Marines in the middle of the night to capture the gunpowder stores of the colony of Virginia held in downtown Williamsburg. He claimed he was on the side of suppressing the slave insurrection. On June 8th, 1775, he gathers up all the silver in the governor's palace and leaves with one other thing, his own personal slaves in tow. Relocates them to his plantation, several miles up the river and relocates himself onto a British warship.
