Little A marks the experience of lack. It is structurally absent from the disjunction that's constantly being managed between your enunciating subject and your grammatical subject. That's why we need a special term for it because it's really tough to wrap our heads around. You also see little A represented in that kind of rudimentary formula on page 12 we were just working with.
