This trial would not be open to the public, but any one who had an interest and money and influence was invited. The six men who were present could barely see the court room, though there was a huge mirror in place, positioned to reflect the morning sunlight on to their faces. When the men were asked to enter a plea, joseph dawson broke down in tears. He begged mercy for his crimes from the court and also from god. Every was named and charged in absentia. They all wanted to see these men hanged for all their crimes, but the rape especially.
