The Low Density Lipoprotein Oxidation Hypothesis
The low density lipoprotein oxidation hypothesis gained traction during the 1980s because it was noted that in general non oxidized LDL does not cause foam cell formation. In other words, LDL has to become oxidized first in order for atherosclerosis to develop. linoleic acid contained within LDL can be seen as the true culprit initiating the process of atherosclerosis. Contuing on oxidized LDL was found to be atherogenic and toxic to endothelial cells. Endothelial dysfunction is linked with erectile dysfunction, exercise intolerance, hypertension and even increased risk of thrombosis or clots.
