The sway of alcohol over mankind is unquestionably due to its power to stimulate the mystical faculties of human nature. Addiction changes the structure of the brain in ways that undermine our capacity for voluntary control. Luckily, our brains are remarkably resilient and can rewire itself even into old age. The possibility of renewal exists so long as life exists. How to support that possibility in others and in ourselves is the ultimate question.
