The History of Palestine

Archaeological investigation of palestine dates only to the very late nineteenth century. Early excavations in jerusalem excited local jewish opposition and scandal in europe. Serious work only began with sir william matthew flinders petri. Petrie insisted that history was to be found in systematically uncovering layer after layer, looking for the details. And key to those details were pottery fragments, not mighty sculptures.
