Severian's Dog Is a Prehistoric Bear, Right?

Severian Triscoll takes on the role of a man who cleans and fixes up an injured dog. The animal is in pain, but it doesn't seem to know what's wrong with it. Severian does not use any sort of anesthesia or pain dampening for his work. But at the same time, although it's never explicitly mentioned, this is severe torture to the animal.
