Rousseau was among the philosophs and atheists of the french enlightenment. But he had a correspondence with voltaire, who really did hate christianity. He says there are all sorts of private areas where you can believe whatever you want. It's not your job to intrude and figured out what is in people's best interest - rather, it's up to them.
