The Politics of Free Movement in the United States
The political classes are certainly not unified on this question. The labor party in the 19 hundreds establishes itself as a distinct kind of party from the liberal party. Anti chinese politics is a major factor in the consolidation of the labor party against the conservatives. And so it's the elite who support assimilation and integration, and it's the working classes who are really using their resentment against capital to justify these exclusion laws.
