In the wake of World War II France was developing a more modernized capitalist economy. The development of 68 is usually connected to the emergence of the student movement. French intellectuals were frustrated by university reforms aimed at making students into cogs within the capitalist system. Some elements of the new left were very dedicated to a kind of culturalist mode of politics in which they were actually taking anti-Marxist positions.
