The Danes had large numbers of Northumbrian allies, as well as various nobles and supporters from southern England. And somewhere in there was the king's handpicked man, William Mallet, along with his wife and kids. So when William and his army approached the historic Market Town of Pontifract, which was perched on the side of the river air, it must have been a relief because they were in the home stretch now.
