The day after his death, Xeno's widow Ariadne appeared before the crowds in the Hippodrome. The dynastic principle was clearly a major influence on those at court. With no obvious successor available, Ariadne was seen as THE source of legitimacy. She chose an imperial chamberlain who she knew and liked, Flavius Anastasius.
