The Spontaneity of the Recording Process

Glenn Gould believed that the recording process had its own kind of spontaneity, though perhaps a less risky one. Rather than simply seeking complete control over the creative process, Gould wanted to allow the recording process itself to guide him creatively. The real virtue of the recording process is not in its inherent perfectionism, but in the afterthought control by which one can operate upon the raw material of performance.
