The New Yorker: Fiction

CHAPTER

How Do You Write a Story About a Tourist?

The book is about people taking pictures of people who don't want to have them taken. The conflict for Joe Larson is that he wants to make a record. He's not sure about his motivations. And then there's this great moment where he's standing in front of the stoop negotiating with these guys who've stolen it from him, begging them to take his camera. It's inexplicable and says a lot more about why we take pictures than those first two do.
