Making Sense with Sam Harris

CHAPTER

The Expedential Curve in Biology

synthetic biology is what's known as an expedential technology. That means it gets more powerful and cheaper in rapidly compounding ways. The output that cost a thousand bucks last year might cost 500 a day, two, 50 next year, and before we know it, just pennies. We've all personally lived through this with computing - 15 years ago, not even bill gates could casually place video calls from his telphone. But to day, billions of people can. And i'm one of them. This sort of thing happens all the time with expedential technologies. Over just a few years, complete non experts pick up capabilities that were initially beyond the top people in the field.
