archaeological data do not support the massive military sweep that Joshua, the book of Joshua, lays out. Of those 31 towns listed in Joshua 12, 16 were destroyed. Nothing says outsiders invaded and did this; these look more like in-house Canaanite skirmishes. So Israel's beginnings are mysterious from an archaeological point of view.
