Is Visual Studio Code a Good Place to Start?

The code is color coded, different sections and different colors. It runs in Windows Mac, Linux, Raspberry Pi, everything. Is it a good place to start? I would say it's a great place to start. A lot of more experienced programmers might use something like Vim or emacs which to me is just a little bit too austere.
