In 1971, a group of students break into an FBI field office in media, Pennsylvania. They get more than 1,000 documents and leak them to the press. Americans learn for the first time just how extensive the FBI's surveillance systems had been on ordinary Americans. And I think that really is a turning point for Americans. Tom: When did it become known that the FBI had done this to Martin Luther King? Deborah: It was when Hoover died in 1972; Nixon was sorry to see him go.
