Most people are utilitarian when it comes to animals. When you're talking about whether a person stranded on an island is allowed to eat fish, they tend to not think about the fish's right to have a life or something like that. You can have this idea that like a deontological approach to animal ethics, but I don't think it works very well at all because you basically can't live unless you're a Janist or something. Like you really can't live without killing.
