Hadrian's Tours of the Roman Empire
By my calculations, hadrian spent roughly half of his 21 year reign on one of his extended tours of the empire. And even when he was home in italy, he resided at his villa in tvoli, rather than in rome itself. As we move forward, this will become a growing trend as more militant provincials will the purple and never even deigned to return to the alleged capital of the Empire. The trend will reach its full expression with the rise of diocletian, who despised the city, and constantine, who would abandon it forever.
