The Irony of the Sanhedrin
In verse 28 of John 18, Jesus is led from Caiaphas to the Hall of Judgment. But he and his followers don't go into the Praetorium " lest they be defiled" This blatant contrast between their strict observance of ritual purity while ignoring the law's ethical demands epitomizes the irony that John is portraying here in his gospel.
