The Legacy of the Maginot Line

The Maginot line was built in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The French believed they needed to prepare for a possible Second World War. Many military leaders from around the world thought defense had the advantage over offensive operations. But technological advances of the mid and late 1930s were far in the future when the idea of fortifications was planted firmly in French planning.
