The Face of the French Army
In 17 92, the french army was about 100 thousand men strong. By 17 94, that number would be well over half a million. Most of the soldiers were not criminals but ordinary men who had left behind homes and careers to defend the republic. In earlier eras soldiers were despised, considered little better than criminals. The army began to resemble broader french society.
