Medical debt is now the most common type of third party debt collection listed on consumer credit reports. One estimate published last year in the journal jama found that medical debt amounted to at least a hundred and forty billion nationally. Communities of color, those experiencing disabilities, those with lower incomes and women disproportionately have more medical debt.
