The Emancipation Proclamation and Collective Trauma
Sally Kohn: I find it difficult to perceive Abraham Lincoln as ending slavery. The Emancipation Proclamation was a tool of war, and it even says that in the beginning. We didn't really fight this civil war to end slavery; we fought it to stop its spread for economic reasons. And my question here is how do we ever change like the underlying consciousness, like the underlying causation?Kohn: In order to heal collective trauma, there has to be ethical correction.
