The Role of Public Opposition in Industrial Disputes
In an article that's due to appear in The Guardian you write about the role played by public support. You say it is assumed alignment of public sentiment with strikers moves them toward a victory while backlash against unions risks their defeat. However the relative levels of sympathy drawn by different workers doesn't suddenly translate itself into leverage. Can you explain why the role of public opinion in industrial disputes is more complex than is typically supposed? And so good public opinion clearly does not immediately translate themselves into leverage.
