The Old State Hospital was the home of patients with mental health issues. The hospital had its own graveyard where patients were buried so Book and other stronger patients would carry wooden caskets containing the departed to the graveyard. After lowering the casket, Book would lean up against an elm tree and sobbed for each patient that he had helped carry to their final resting place.
