The Old State Hospital in Chicago
The Old State Hospital was the home of patients with mental health issues. The hospital had its own graveyard where patients were buried so Book and other stronger patients would carry wooden caskets containing the departed to the graveyard. After lowering the casket, Book would lean up against an elm tree and sobbed for each patient that he had helped carry to their final resting place. Over time, a book became a very helpful and calm patient. Years later, the cemetery elm started to die so a couple of guys went to cut it down as the chains ate away at the trunk but resumed cutting days later without success.
