Is There a Requirement to Be a Service Chief on the CMC?
There aren't that many billets right below the CMC level, and so it's fairly predictable that you would have been in one of these sort of stepping stones. But I think more to the point, there really isn't a formal requirement to have ever really led joint forces. And through their careers, they tend to stay within one specific service, or even branch, and not really branch out to other services. So again, really the expertise they bring is to know a whole lot about if you're an army officer land combat. They don't really bring that kind of career broadening sort of experience thatyou would have in our system.
